It’s been a good beginning of the season for ski areas. After dry and warm weather in October, November is ushering in colder temperatures for snowmaking and Mother Nature is helping in the natural snow department. So much so that five ski areas will open early this year. Monarch and Powderhorn will open on Friday and Steamboat, Aspen and Snowmass will open on Saturday.
The extra snowfall has also allowed Vail Mountain to open up enough terrain to allow top-to-bottom skiing to Vail Village and crews hope to have an egress to Lionshead Village by the end of this week.
Vail Mountain opened on Nov. 15 and welcomed guests with free hot chocolate, coffee, strudel and a live DJ spinning tunes before the rope dropped. On-mountain dining options include Eagle’s Nest for those beginners at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola (No. 19) and Mid-Vail has eats, too. Don’t forget about the new Powerline Pub at Mid-Vail in case you want to pop in for a beer or check the score of the game. Those who aren’t skiing can meet you there since it is right at the top of Gondola One (No. 1) by purchasing a scenic lift ticket at the ticket office.

Vail Comedy Show
Comedy can be found at El Sabor in the Lionsquare Lodge when the Vail Comedy Show returns with a pop-up performance to round out your weekend. Tanael Joachim, who prefers to be called TJ, is scheduled perform this Sunday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Originally from Haiti, Joachim is now based in New York City and is a regular at The Comedy Cellar in the Big Apple and has written for The New York Times.
“The Comedy Cellar is a wonderful experience for an up-and-coming comedian,” Joachim said. “I liken it to going to comedy university. Every night, you get to attend these free classes with masters of the craft, and you’re soaking up a kind of knowledge that you can’t get anywhere else.”
Joachim has performed in Colorado before and made stops in Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs and lived in Utah so he feels familiar with the state.
“Colorado is an excellent comedy market from my experience. One of the oldest and best comedy clubs in the country is Comedy Works in Denver,” Joachim said. “The appreciation, the appetite and the love for comedy, it’s all here in Colorado. Coloradans can handle themselves and they know what comedy is and they’re not trying to make it something it isn’t.”

To get you into the holiday spirit and to kick off the season, Discover Vail presents various arts, activities and events to welcome winter. What was formerly called Revely Vail and Vail Holidays is now known as Vail Apr猫s and runs from Vail’s Opening Day through Jan. 5.
Check out events like art workshops, ice skating exhibitions, holiday tree lightings and more. This weekend you can take part in the free Silent Disco that happens weekly. From 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday, go to Lionshead Village for this fun way to groove to tunes outdoors under the stars or snow.

Live music with WABI at Shakedown Bar
Shakedown Bar has been rockin’ all throughout the off-season and is your headquarters for live music and enjoying a late-night show. This weekend, this bar at the top of Bridge Street will host WABI, Denver’s electronic duo of Eric Halborg and Kevin Sankel. These musicians and producers blend dance music, vocals, guitar and even harmonica into their sounds. Halborg also performs with Dragondeer, and Sankel keeps busy performing with Ground Loop.
