I-70 cleanup postponed after rock slide closes U.S. 40

U.S. Highway 40 closed after major rockslide west of Steamboat Springs near Milner spilled onto the roadway early Wednesday, Sept. 18. The closure began around 7 a.m. and the roadway reopened around 5:30 p.m.
Just before 11:30 a.m., Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson Lisa Schwantes said crews were working to blast the large rock into pieces small enough for construction crews to move the material off the highway.
Schwantes also said a CDOT “geotechnical team” arrived at the site of the rock slide around noon today to determine if there is additional loose rock along the highway that would require further mitigation work.
CDOT said it had planned to close I-70 in Glenwood Canyon today for clean-up work after a major tractor trailer accident occurred on the stretch of highway yesterday, which would have routed traffic through Craig and Steamboat Springs 鈥� but a decision to postpone the work was made due to the rockslide on U.S. 40.
