Prep notebook: Vail Christian volleyball players earn all-conference awards and winter sports seasons begin
The Vail Christian girls volleyball team brought home a slew of post season awards after going 17-8 and qualifying for the 2A state tournament for the second time in three years this fall.
Senior Jessie Allen was named first team all-conference, CHSAA all-state honorable mention and also was named an alternate to the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sport all-state squad. Allen led the Saints with 559 digs this season. The libero also recorded 71 aces.
Mary McClarrinon was named second-team all-conference and earned CHSAA all-state honorable mention as well. The sophomore spiker led Vail Christian in kills (311) and was third in digs (221).
Saints setters Tenley Brasington and Betty Bartok both were named Western Slope honorable mention athletes. Bartok led the team in aces (73), was third in kills (123) and second in assists (249). Brasington led the team in assists (396).
Vail Christian coach Britney Branson was named the 2A Western Slope coach of the year after guiding the Saints to the 2A Region 11 title. Vail Christian has gone 35-13 since Branson took over in 2023. In the last two seasons, the Saints have posted 14-0 and 7-3 league marks as well.

Vail Mountain School soccer players earn all-state honors
Vail Mountain School soccer star Sebastian Uribe earned after guiding the Gore Rangers to a 6-8-3 season last fall. Drew Johnson and Colm Kinney were also recognized as 2A all-state honorable mention athletes for Vail Mountain School.
Battle Mountain soccer player earns All-American honors
Battle Mountain defender Daniel Sanchez , announced in a press release on Tuesday. Seventy-eight boys and 63 girls were named to the squad, which will be recognized at the United Soccer Coaches All-American Ceremony on Jan. 11 at the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago. Sanchez is one of two Colorado players on the team, along with Boulder High School’s Xander Sevian.
Winter sports seasons start up
- The Eagle Valley boys basketball team is off to a 2-1 start after defeating Steamboat Springs 57-45 last Thursday and Weld Central 78-39 on Friday. The Devils fell to Montrose 44-40 the following day.
- The Eagle Valley girls basketball team is also 2-1 after taking down Coal Ridge 47-27 and Weld Central 43-29 on Thursday and Friday, respectively, before falling to Montrose 32-25 on Saturday. Zakia Shreeve led three Devils into double figures against Coal Ridge. The senior tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards as Addison Mandeville and Abby Talbot each pitched in 10 points apiece. Against Weld Central, Talbot led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds and Alondra Ruiz had eight rebounds and eight steals as the Devils jumped out to a 15-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
- Vail Mountain School boys basketball is 1-1 after falling to Highland 61-44 last Friday and defeating Cedaredge 55-39 on Saturday. The Gore Rangers are at La Junta on Thursday; their first home game is on Jan. 17 against De Beque.
- Asher Leonard dropped 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Rayman Romanin added 16 to help the Vail Christian boys basketball team defeat Cedaredge 69-65 last Friday. The Saints ended up falling to Highland 75-30 in the second game of tournament action. They will host Nucla at 6 p.m. on Thursday in their home opener.
- The Vail Christian girls basketball team is also 1-1 after taking down Lake County 43-16 and falling to Cedaredge 55-12 last weekend.
- Battle Mountain girls basketball is 2-1 after defeating Hayden 42-25 and squeaking past Meeker 38-37 last Thursday and Friday. Izzy Kovacik led a balanced Battle Mountain attack, scoring nine points in both games. The junior tallied nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists in the win over Hayden. Elle Glendining controlled the boards against Meeker, hauling in 10 rebounds to go along with a block and steal and four points. Rylee Sullivan carried the Cowboys, scoring 21 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field in the loss. Battle Mountain travels to Rifle on Dec. 17 and won’t open up in Edwards until Jan. 9 against Monument Academy.
- The Battle Mountain boys hockey team opens its 2024-25 campaign Wednesday night against Rampart 2-3. The Huskies boys basketball team starts the season against Windsor Charter Academy (3-0) on Thursday.
