West Grand wide receiver Joe Probst hauled in seven catches for 157 yards and three touchdowns to lead the undefeated Mustangs to a 48-0 win over Vail Christian on Friday. No. 7 West Grand improved to 8-0 on the year and 5-0 in league play.

“Overall, I’m proud of how the kids played. West Grand is a good team. They’re undefeated on the season for a reason,” said Vail Christian head coach Tim Pierson, whose team fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the A-8 Northwest League. “They’re well coached and they do some things really well.

West Grand threw for 199 yards and ran the ball for 130 more in the win. A depleted Saints squad was missing three offensive line starters and was shorthanded due to combination of injuries and fall break. Pierson was proud of how several players stepped into starting roles, including freshman center Brady Pryor, who handled one of the better defensive tackles in the state.

“We moved the ball at times; just couldn’t convert on some key downs,” Pierson continued. “But you know, I’m proud of how we rallied and competed. We knew we were a little bit banged up coming out of the Mancos game, but just going out and getting a chance to play a game and compete with a group of guys is really important.”

The Saints sit at 17th in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index with two games remaining. Vail Christian closes out the year against Hayden on Oct. 26 and Lake County on Nov. 2.
