Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief honored with Volunteer of the Year award
Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brita Horn was recently honored with the Volunteer of the Year award during Colorado’s Second Congressional District Awards ceremony, held at the University of Colorado Boulder.
“I am blessed to lead a wonderful and dedicated department and it is truly an honor to be recognized for the amazing work our department provides to our community,” Horn said. “Colorado has 375 fire districts protecting our state, of which around 125 are made up mostly of vounteers. It is important that we recognize and support these volunteers who respond during our darkest times,” she added.
Under Horn’s leadership, the Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department secured a portion of a $1.3 million federal grant supporting the volunteer firefighters within her department and eight other rural Colorado fire districts.
The Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department serves a approximately 350 residents over a 244 square-mile area made up of ranches, homes, rivers, and a major travel corridors. In addition, Horn has been an active participant in the Colorado State Fire Commission, Colorado State Fire Chief’s Association, International Fire Chiefs Association, Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code Board and other civic and professional organizations.
