Letter: We need safe, affordable housing more than ever
We are writing in response to a recent letter, “We’re in danger of losing those who are the foundation of our valley.” We agree — it is extremely difficult for our workforce to find a place to live. Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to create homeownership solutions. For almost 30 years, we have built strong partnerships and cultivated relationships with organizations and people who are trying to create a better community for all. We must continue to work together toward solutions.
Home prices have more than doubled, and our community is in jeopardy. People can’t put down roots when they can’t afford to live where they work. We are wrapping up our three-year plan to Double Our Impact — building more homes in partnership with hardworking locals. We continually strive to expand our construction capacity and find other innovative homeownership solutions through modular and stick-built construction and by providing 0% financing.
People come to Habitat Vail Valley with problems beyond housing. The root of many problems — mental and physical health, employment, financial, educational outcomes — is the lack of safe, affordable housing. In response, we launched the Building Futures program, which helps increase self-sufficiency and access to community resources and opportunities. Since its inception just 18 months ago, we’ve helped 853 people. We, like other local nonprofits, want to help.
We aren’t doing this alone. We help connect people with services, local agencies and other nonprofits, giving families the foundation to thrive.
Please stay engaged and be part of the conversation so, together, we can help increase housing security. Share our contact information, reach out, and drop in. Habitat is a community resource — the bigger the network, the more relationships we build, the better we all can lift up our community.
